Swedish Massage

This uses firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension and create other health benefits. Therapists use massage oils to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes called effleurage. Other classic Swedish massage moves include kneading, friction, stretching and (sometimes) tapping.

Generally during Swedish massage, you’re nude underneath a towel or sheet. The therapist uncovers only the part of the body he/she is working on, a technique called “draping”. You can keep your underwear on during Swedish massage, and many newcomers do. Feel free to state your preference for pressure, which can range from light to firm.

Deep Tissue Massage

This is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as “adhesions.”)

Aromatherapy – Massage with Oils

Experience the connection of Body, Mind & Spirit using true essential oils. Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils derived from plants to affect your mood and alleviate pain. Essential oils are mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond, apricot kernel, or grape seed oil.

I use up to five oils in a mixture. I choose the oils based on what you need. A relaxing aromatherapy massage, for instance, might have lavender or bergamot, while a massage for sore muscles might include peppermint and eucalyptus.

Essential oils are volatile, highly concentrated plant extracts, derived from leaves, bark, roots, seeds resins and flowers. They can also be used in hydrotherapy baths, facials and body treatments. You can also use them at home.

Aromatherapy should not be confused with fragrances or perfume oils. Fragrances are often made from chemicals, and lack the therapeutic properties of essential oils. So just because someone lights a scented candle doesn’t make it aromatherapy!

Pregnancy Massage

This massage therapy, also called pre-natal massage, is specifically tailored for the expectant mother’s needs.

How is pregnancy massage different?

The mother’s body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding. Proper positioning ensures comfort and safety for the mother and baby. Also, some massage techniques, such as deep tissue work, cannot be used. Certain areas of the body should be avoided during pregnancy.

What are the benefits?

Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints.
It’s a popular complementary therapy during pregnancy for back pain, when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited.
Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy.
Massage therapy has been found to reduce anxiety and depression.

Who do I go to for pregnancy massage?

Look for a massage therapist who is certified in pregnancy massage. That means that the therapist has had specialized training in pregnancy massage, and knows what is safe for the mother and baby.

Precautions

Many massage therapists do not recommend massage in the first trimester. Also, women with certain health conditions may not be able to have pregnancy massage. It’s best to consult your doctor and a certified pregnancy massage therapist.

Massage Cupping

A wonderful ancient technique has found its place in the modern world of healing. Massage Cupping™ bodywork is based on the common practice of Chinese cupping therapy. The incredible results this simple treatment produces have truly impressed those who experience its subtle power.

By creating suction and negative pressure, Massage Cupping™ therapy is used to soften tight muscles and tone attachments, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, bring hydration and blood flow to body tissues, and drain excess fluids and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways. Massage Cupping™ bodywork is versatile and can easily be modified to accomplish a range of techniques, from lymphatic drainage to deep tissue release.
